Seen as how Meade hasn't even begun to ship these yet I'm curious to know how you got your hands on one. I'm not calling you a liar that would post a review of something you've never even seen but I would like to know how long you have had this scope and where it came from because I would like one too.

Thanks.

The 5" LXD-55's began shipping in the beginning of April. The full release schedule for the rest of the product line is listed on the ASTRONOMICS home page.

I pre-ordered the LXD55 AR-5 refractor in January. Took delivery on 9 March from a local dealer. No special deal or inside track at all. Please note that the actual focal length is 1180mm for the f/9.3 system, which differs from the header info.

Thanks for the info, please keep everyone posted on your thoughts about this scope, especially the pointing accuracy. BTW, I asked Valery at Aries if his Chromacorr would work with these and he said they definitely would. A Meade represe ntative told me these scopes weren't due until the last week in March. He also told me that the optics are made by Meade in the US. Was he at least half right?

Thanks Again!

I don't know where the objective was made. Would guess Meade has tooling for 5" at Irvine, so it is possible. Just don't know. The cell is molded plastic and lacks adjusting screws. It is fine for this price point. The Chromacor needs different spacing; might try one this weekend.

Astigmatism was caused by a mis-collimated focuser. After adjusting the focuser for central axis alignment, all is well. If you get one of these, check for collimation, despite user manual tips to the contrary.

The Schmidt-Newts are made at Meade's factory in California and the refractors are imported from China.

I'd correct this by stating that the Schmidt-Newtonian _optics_ are made in the US. The rest of the tube is made and assembled in China (hence the "Made in China" lables on the box). I bet even the snazzy plastic focuser is sourced from China ;)
