This OVA series was created for young children (get over the fact it wasn't made for teens) and focuses on the mecha. The star of the series is not the characters themselves and/or the situations they find themselves in. If you do not like the plot watch something else perhaps a tad more profound like GunBuster or Roujin-Z, but if you love mecha, remember this classic OVA series by Toshihiro Hirano is all meat and potatoes mecha! Get your shojo fix elsewhere, this series is not for feminists and especially not starry-eyed girls in love with crap like FY. Btw I dare anyone who dislikes this series to list another series where the mecha designs and battles are remotely gorgeous or detailed.
