TeleVue Plossl 17mm
Great EP all around, works excellent with barlows for hi-power views yet still allows decent eye-relief,views are SHARP over the entire FOV contrast on objects like the orion nebula is stunning and i enjoy hearing the oh wows,i've even had people look at the lens thinking there was a picture taped to it,,,this is my all-time favorite EP and is worth seeking out on the used market.

Happy Gazing !!!!!

TeleVue Plossl 17mm
This eyepiece is as good as a Plossl can get. Sharp, flat field with excellent contrast and comfortable eye relief.

I havwe to share the opinions of the others rating this ocular. Clear and sharp to the edge. Works equally well in my C-8, C/V 102 and Short tube 80. Good eye relief and very comfortable to use. When you balance the performance to the price of this eyepiece (new), it has to be considered top rated. Worth finding on the used market.

Good eyepiece. Not as sharp or as bright as an 18mm Ultima.

Just picked this eyepiece up used on AstroMart. Sharp all the way across the field of view. I can tell that it will become one of my favorites. Highly recommended!

I picked this one up on a lark from eBay and I have been very impressed how good of an EP it really is. It won't replace any of my Naglers, Panoptics or Radians, but it is still one heck of a good eyepiece! It is superior to all of the other various Plossls in my EP collection.

TeleVue Plossl 17mm
I'm very disappointed with this eyepiece.
During nights of good seeing I can easily see the 5th and 6th stars of Orion's trapeze when I use the UO Ortho 18mm or the Ultima 18mm but I barely see the 5th star with the TV 17mm and the nebula shows less contrast, sharpness and extension when use it.
Even with a chinese Plossl 17mm I can see more details.

First of all I own both the UO 18mm and the TV 17mm Plossl. Both are fine eyepieces and work well for what they are in both my f/6.9 80mm refractor and f/8 6" Newtonian. I understand that you may have received a bad sample, but most disagree with you. BTW, your frustrations are not justification for putting down the Chinese.

You should check out this guy's voting record! He hates EVERYTHING. I have owned this EP and consider it a nine at worst. I think Mr. Fos might consider a different outlet for whatever frustrations are ailing him. In fact, I would prefer it. Go somewhere else, Robert.

Most people consider this site a valuable resource for info on astro-products. It does not deserve to be a forum for misdirected venting of some sort.
Let's see. 6 people give it a 9-10, you give it a 4. Hmmmm. Ever consider that you could have a defective EP? Or perhaps you're not rating the EP based on its qualities? A wider FOV w/ a Chinese plossl? Doubtful. Too bad this forum gives you a 7 as a "reliable vote". So what would you consider a 1, 2 or 3? Not much room for the 75% of EP that below TV plossl standards, huh? Do us a favor: stop posting reviews.

PS It's not the "trapeze". It's the Trapezium. Can you say rank amateur?

I used to have this EP and used it for mid-power viewing through a good Celestron G5. I was VERY satisfied with the view. The image was bright and contrasty, and the FOV and eyerelief were fine. Also, the feel and finish of this version of TV Plossl oozes quality. I am suprised by the previous vote, given my (and numerous others') experience that TeleVue makes some of the best plossls in existence. I suppose there's no accounting for taste...

Although a discontinued eyepiece, it is well worth seeking out on the used market. I have used the 17 Plossl for a long time and the only plossl class eyepiece I have found that will beat it is the Tak 18LE (but not by much and at 3-4 times the cost). Eye relief is good and comfortable. Light throughput is excellent (almost equal to the UO 18 Ortho) and contrast is very good. This is one of those rare eyepieces that may not do everything perfect, but it does everything well enough to make it a winner. My comparison with the Ultima was close, but I gave the edge to the TV on contrast. Both appeared equally sharp. On a good night the E and F elements are easy with this eyepiece and my 4in APO.

I just picked this up through Astromart. As a Digiscoper I find that this eyepiece is near the power limit for my setup, 79X in my SV80 with a 2,8 Klee Barlow. It is an excellent eyepiece in every measurable catagory. I'm very happy to have found one on the used market. This is my fourth smooth side TV Plossl and the fourth ten.
