Nikon XL 8-16x40
Superb binoculars, hard to believe they are a zoom. FOV is a bit narrow at 8x, but at 16x it is actually fairly wide for that magnification. The sky-darkening as you zoom is impressive, and really brings out the bright objects, such as Orion nebula, Double Cluster, moon and planets. 40mm aperture does limit resolution, but these are hand-holdable and terrific.Great for daytime use. Highly recommended especially when they were recently offered at a bargain price as they were discontinued.

Nikon XL 8-16x40
Absolutely incredible zoom binocular, stars were pinpoint sharp to the edge of the field throughout the entire range 8-16x range. Contrast and field of view improve impressivelly with increasing power and remain hand holdable even at 16X. Zoom allows you to dial in optimum exit pupil for extended objects. Outstanding day and night, particularly in suburban skies. Resolution fantastic for a 40mm.

I bought these during the astronomics blowout sale. They are very good optically, almost as good as my 10x42 Superior Es. They are definitely the best zoon binocular I've ever used. Almost the only acceptable one. That said, the main zoom problem hasn't yet been solved, namely small apparent field at low power. They are a great 16x binoc., but only a good 8x. The superior e and other Nikon e series binocs are still a better way to go.
