Nikon Action Lookout IV 10x50
Excellent binoculars. Sharp, clear, superb color. The depth of field visible during daytime terrestrial viewing gives the illusion of a curved view; sometimes distracting while panning.

Nikon Action Lookout IV 10x50
Very nice binoculars for the price. It has a very wide true field of view (6.5 degrees) considering its 10x magnification. Large apparent field (65 degrees) and good eye relief (12m) gives a pleasing panaroma image - terrestrial or astronomical. A bit strange that apparent field is so much talked about with telescope eyepieces but not with binoculars. To me it's one of the most important specifications. Body has a nice comfortable light rubberised good quality feel to it, rubber eye caps fold down for eye-glass wearers. 10x doesn't pose much of a stability problem. Image: sharp, especially daytime: bright colours. Haven't looked through Fujinons, etc, so can't comment and compare too much on sharpness, edge sharpness, etc. Multi-coated.
Downside: there's a wrap around effect when panning, especially daytime, but get used to it. It's a worthwhile tradeoff for the wide apparent and true fields. Exit pupil is 5mm, but worth the 10x magnification which "pulls" in the images like star clusters in dark sky sites, etc. A bit heavier than normal (960g). Box says its Made in Japan. Hard to believe for the price, considering it's a Nikon.

For the price these are some of the best astro / birding / wildlife binocs available. Sharp, bright images. Have not noticed the field curvature noted in the other posts. Great for twilight wildlife viewing-grab lots of light. Cap on front of hinge unscrews to reveal socket for 'L' shaped tripod adapter-pretty classy for inexpensive binocs like these. Very solid feel to them and easy to hand hold considering 10x magnification. About 90% of the performance of the Zeiss/Swarovski/Fujinon/etc. brands for a fraction of the cost.

Visit Nikon's binocular website. They have one of the most complete, concise explanations of optical aberrations I have ever read. Includes illustrations of the various aberrations and is written simply enough so one does not have to be an optical engineer to understand it.

Looked at several pair of these. Found them all pretty much the same. Good field of view, very bright image. The most annoying issue is the curving of the image at the edge of the field of view. This was really bad to the point of seeing the image bend that your looking at. If you can overlook this then there probably an ok buy. Due to the above problem have to mark this one way down.

Tried them in the store and did not like them at all. Extreme curvature of the field, about 50m away anything not within 0.75 (based on the fact that the entire FOV is 6.1 deg) degree of the centre was out of focus. However, I think stars would be in focus since they are focused at infinity but I would imagine the images to be very soft. Not recommended, would rate it a 5 but don't own it so I wont rate it to be fair. Eye relief is also on the short side.

Views are clear to the edge and bright. They fared as well as the Pentax (similar) model that costs $500. They are comfortable and easy to focus. Wish the caps were tied together, but performance is good. I wouldn't pay retail price for them, but at around $150 they perform well.

Very nice glasses, but performance falls off some at the edge. For the price, a great instrument. I use mine a lot.

Excellent optics, I have not noticed the edge effects mentioned in other reviews. Star colors clear. Nice field of view, Pleiades quite breathtaking.
Jupiter and 4 moons nice and crisp. Saturn, only ears were visible, not ring structure.
A bit heavy for me, I use the tripod adapter and mount for viewing.

Good binos for the price

Optics are not fully coated. I've pulled apart and checked the inner eyepiece elements are not coated at all.

Some curvature of field and edge loss is severe. 5.5 degrees and the image would be very nice.

They are very sharp in the centre of the field and well colour corrected.

Still do the job for the price.

The binoculars are not fully multi-coated. If you shine a flashlight through each side of the binocular at an angle, you will notice that many of the lens reflect a white light. I do not think that the prism is coated. But when you view the sky through these binoculars, the images are very bright - just look at Adrommeda. I have used much more expense binoculars and have not noticed a significant difference in brightness. I have notice a very slight difference in sharpness. I did notice a curvature of the field at the edges, but it was far from extreme. I have yet to look through any wide-angle binoculars and not noticed some curvature. The binoculars were heavy, but sturdy and I also wished the lens caps were attached and that there was more eye relief. On an absolute, scale not considering price, I would rate this binocular a 8.5. The question is would you be prepared to pay at least $500 for binoculars that is a 10 out of 10.

I went to buy these binoculars at OPT. Picked up a pair after looking at their demo pair in the store. When I later looked through the pair I bought, there was a pretty substantial missalignment between left and right (resulting in a double image).

I took them back to OPT right away, they were very helpful and got a replacement from their stock - same thing! They brought out their entire stock and out of 5 I thought I found a good one and took it.

When I got home and looked through them the next day. I saw a noticable missalignment when focused at long distance. So that makes 5 out of 5 bad.

I took them back and OPT was very good about selling me another brand. They are sending their entire Nikon Action inventory back - they had no more in stock for me to select from.

I don't know what might have happened. Maybe their shipment got dropped or left in a trailer in the hot sun, or there was some problem in the Nikon factory the day these were all assembled.

I only mention this so others will carefully check for alignment on the pair they may get. I'm sure based on other's comments that these are good binocs in their price range.

Since I did not get this brand and check in any other detail, I am leaving this as a no vote - just wanted to comment.

nice for the price, mushy field edge but eyepiece design at this price is to be expected, personally like the ergonomics but not to everyones taste.

Daytime is excelent. Night is a different story. Anything bright, ghosting is servere...optics are great...it's just that the pair "I" TOOK BACK , had some serious problems. Was something wrong with the right side lens or something???
I could see two stars where there was only one..hummm.that is ONLY out of the right side ....
NOT a goood look..
i realize that this is LOTS to do with quality control..
that i paid 151.00 dollars for them ... thank god i was able to take them back and get a total refund.
if they did not have that defect, these would have been some really good bino's for daytime veiwing..
night is a differant story all together.as i said before, the ghosting is servere ,moon or any outside lights in the area...
goodness..
IF these things would have had SOMEHTING interal to stop the scatered light, they COULD be really good for astronomy as well..
thank you for your time..

I tried these against $80.00 minolta's the minolta's blew them away! same weight factor about, but images from the nikon's were dull and low intensity compared to minolta's 10x50 classics at half the price. unless you can spend 400 or 500 hundred this is your best buy on the market. Just thought you would like to know. mike n.
