Toshiba SD-3108
Best picture quality, features and sound quality (except for the Sony 7000) on the market. I'll spend the difference in price on DVD's.

Toshiba SD-3108
Great player for the money. Doesn't have the build quality of the sony's. I guess all that matters is the picture and sound it produces, which is great.

Toshiba SD-3108
Video quality is excellent for the Toshiba 3108. The menu is much improved over the previous generations of players. The remote is back-lighted and has a slick jog/shuttle dial.

I do not care for the built-in DD decoder, but I do not use it anyway. A good home theater system should include a dedicated Dolby Digital pre-amp. Another drawback of the 3108 is that the digital output does not pass 24-bit/96KHz bitstream. Pioneer latest DVD players can pass 24/96 output. This makes the 3108 a 9 rating rather than a perfect 10.

Toshiba SD-3108
PURCHASED THIS UNIT 25 OCT 98. 417.00 FROM ONE-CALL. PRICE TO POINT I THINK IT BEETS THE SONY 500D. I WAS DISAPPOINTED, HOWEVER, THAT THE BUILT IN DOLBY DIGITAL DECODER DOES NOT HAVE LEVEL CONTROLS FOR THE REAR SURRONDS NOR THE CENTER CHANNEL. I AM USING A SONY GA9ESG 5.1 READY RECIEVE AND HAVE NO CONTROL OVER OUTPUT LEVELS. THE BLAACK LEVEL OPTION OF THE PLAYER IS REALLY NICE. IS ANYONE SURE THAT IT WILL NOT PASS 24 /96 LIKE IN THE ABOVE MESSAGE? I DO NOT HAVE MEDIA TO PROVE THAT EITHER WAY. BY THE WAR YOU GET FIVE FREE MOVIES WHEN YOU PURCHASE THIS UNIT.

Great player for the money. Remote takes some getting used to. Quick
access to titles. Many features, though I generally don't use them.

Toshiba SD-3108
I have been reserching DVDs for the past 14 months, in all, I have been able to narrow the search down to 3 (listed best to worst)

1) Toshiba 3108 (2108 is just as good)
2) Panosonic A310
3) RCA 5510P

The three are all IDENTICAL in stats.

I have found from demoing them, and talking with a LOT people, plus a MASIVE amount of reserch that the Toshiba is just a hair better.

Also Toshiba was the first to bring out DVD, so it makes sence that theirs is just a little better.

Also to answer an above question,

YES the Toshiba is 24 bit /96 khz.

Toshiba SD-3108
The picture quality and sound quality of this unit are excellent. I don't really have a very high quality stereo hooked up to this unit now, but based
on my experience with it already (and many magazine reviews), I'm sure it will
perform superbly when I have the money to buy something better (like the
Yamaha RX-V995 or RX-V795). The on screen menus are good, & I like the fact
that the remote has backlighting and a jog/shuttle dial. My only gripes are
that the remote is a little on the large side, and the unit doesn't play Audio
CDs that I've created using the CD Writer I have in my computer. Other than
that, I love it so far. I purchased it for a so-so price of $464.81
(delivered) from One Call...I recommend talking to Chris there- he seems
pretty knowledgable. Oh, and you get the DVD movies City of Angels, Eraser,
Lost In Space, Sphere, and US Marshalls free if you buy it before 3/31/99! :)

Toshiba SD-3108
I highly recommend this player.I purchased it for $429 locally in Chicago.I had a problem with the range of the remote,so I emailed ccustomer service at Toshiba and they sent a new replacement remote. The new remote works great with unbeleivable range,it even works pointing it backwards.
As for the sound and picture, its simply amazing. It has all the features you ever want in a player.

Toshiba SD-3108
I am wondering if this unit has the same digital output compatibility problems with Yamaha Dolby Digital Receivers as the SD-3107. I have an SD-3107 and my Yamaha RXV-992 will not automatically switch to Dolby Digital with the 3107. It seems there is something not quite right with the Dolby Digital outputs of the Toshiba units. I contacted Toshiba and they told me they are working on the problem (that was 4 months ago) and that the 3108 has the same problem. I have to switch to another source on the receiver and then back to DVD in order to get it to switch to Dolby Digital. If anyone else has had this problem (or not) with a Toshiba DVD player and a Yamaha DD receiver I would appreciate hearing your story.

Ive had this Player for about 6 months and LOVE IT. Upgraded from a 2108. Using Component into my 61" Toshiba RPTV. Sound great. Picture incredible. Looking to get VE to do some further tweaking. Also waiting on my new Onkyo 777. Currently using Sony925 No so happy with this unit although it sounds good. and many inputs Except Svideo. I would totally recommend the 3108. and yes it is 24/96

Toshiba SD-3108
I rated the 3108 a 9 because, The picture is excellent sharp & clear, and the sound both Dolby Digital & the DTS works like a charm what more could any one want for that Price, Toshiba has done it, The only problem that I have had is that I can't watch the Movie "Alien" the player just locks up, but with all the other movies it works GREAT, I am hoping that the problem with the movie "Alien" can & will be corrected, then I will give the Toshiba a 9 1/2 rateing. Toshiba SD-3108
I love my Toshiba sd-3108, however, I am beginning to find dvd's that will not play on it. Alien and the recent release of Independence Day will not work. I have went thru 8 copies of each with no results. All I get is a check disc. I was told that some dvd's are not compatiable with this machine. I own 145 dvd's and they all work fine. What is going on here! Three of the last four movies i've rented have not worked. I keep getting "Please check disk". The guy at Hollywood Video said something about about the player not reading through the new gold layering. Up till now it's worked great except for a brief pause in scene changes about an hour and twenty in.
