A great high power eyepiece, with good sized field, fair eye relief and excellent sharpness and brightness. Only drawback: no eyecup.

As bright, sharp, and contrasty as an eyepiece can get. Eye relief is a little tight (official UO stat is 7mm) but not impossible with "bare" eyes. Fantastic planetary views! 95% of the performance of a Zeiss at 1/6th the cost and these are available.

Optically this is a great eyepiece for the price. I use it routinely unbarlowed to split close double stars (between 0.5 and 1 arc-second) and barlowed to effect splits down to 0.35 arc-second with my C-14 on the very best nights. Clear, bright and crisp airy discs! I like this eyepiece so much that I ordered a second one for use with my Televue binoviewer. It is an incredible way to observe double stars! All that for only $60.00. UO could charge at least 3x that amount for the eyepiece and it would be worth it.

I got my u.o. optics 9mm ortho Dec 99 for my firstscope 80mm refraactor.Blew away my 6.3 ploosl. I could clearly see three belts on Jupiter.I went back to my ploosl and could see three belts but they were much sharper with the ortho seems to have turbo charged my scope. ranking 10

I use the UO orthos with my Intes Micro MN-56. All of the UO orthos that I presently own from 9mm, 12.5mm, and 18mm provide not only great lunar and planetary views, but also excel at splitting double stars, particulary the 9mm.
I also use the 9mm with the UO 2.8 Klee Barlow for incredible lunar views.
I just ordered the 6mm and 7mm orthos and will report my opinions of same soon.

These Orthos have got to be one of the best buys out there. They aren't Naglers or super-wides, just plain great working EP's.

This is a great eyepiece, as long as you don't mind the 45 degree FOV. It is sharp to the edge, is very bright, and eye relief is adequate. I use it on my Vixen Fluorite, and on my homemade 10 inch f/6 dobsonian. I can usually get a sharper planetary image with this, than with my 12 mm Nagler. I highly recommend this eyepiece! (I am not as fond of my UO 5mm ortho, which has less eye relief,is less sharp, but occasionally shows more planetary detail.)

Eye relief too short to enjoy the otherwise good quality view. In this short a focal length, it's much better to have a Pentax XL, a TeleVue Radian or a Vixen Lanthanum.

The 9mm UO Ortho is my favorite eyepiece in my f/4.5 scope. It is very sharp across the FOV, excellent contrast. Good place to start a no frills workhorse eyepiece set.

Very sharp and clear eyepiece
Very light eyepiece also, which is a big advantage
Eye relief is no concern if you don't have to wear glasses, otherwise it is a problem.
With my takahashi mewlon 180 f/D 12 it gives very nice view of jupiter and saturn

Very fine eyepiece, the best eyepiece at this focal length available for the price. Sharp, good light throughput. Not quite up to the performance of orthos costing 3-5x as much, but closer than you'd think.

I have the UO 9mm ocular and love it. Tack sharp.. Much more contrast than my Meade Plossl.. Matter fact saved up and bought the whole line of UO orthos all very nice and great quality. Highly reccomended. Good to see you can get an excelent ocluar without breaking the bank.

Great contrast and sharp to the edge. Short on eye relief. Rubber eye-gurds from Orion help with the short eye-reief. Could improve if the eyepiece came with an eye-guard.
