Rotel RB-980BX
It is a reliable, good quality, basic 2 channel power amp. It will serve well for budget audiophile.However, for more serious music lovers, it has a slight grain at the treble and bass is not as tight as I want it to be.

Rotel RB-980BX
I have been using 2 980's for about a year. I jumpered the inputs, and bi-amped
my speakers. I have found them to be a great value (I paid $600 each). At very
high sound levels, they maintain excellent low/mid/high freq. sound quality.
They never reach the temperature trip-point, even after prolonged high volume usage. I would also reccomend Rotel pre-amps, another great value

Rotel RB-980BX
I use two Rotel's RB980-BX in a bi-amp configuration. Originally I opted for one RB990-BX, but this gives even better results for only slightly more money. The quality is very very good. The have no apparent 'weaknesses' which is a great thing. There are better amplifiers, but not much as 'balanced' as these Rotel's. Very good money for value. I use the RC990BX pre-amp. The Rotel's can also be used in Brigded-mode, one for each channel, but this sounds bad. I use one for mid-high-range and one for bass-range, my speakers have special terminals for this.

Rotel RB-980BX
This is one of only 2-3 power amps that occupy the 'bottom of the audiophile' nitch. Also looked at Acurus and Adcom. In my area, Acurus dealers hard to find, local Adcom dealer a real jerk. Running them with B&W Matrix 804. I like clean, neutral sound, very sensitive to too bright reproduction. From what I heard, all 3 amps were 'good enough'. Liked build quality of Acurus better, but Rotel's is OK. Other dealers didn't let me A-B their amps with other brands (!); when I tried the Rotel vs others (like high-end Marantz and Sony), I felt Rotel most neutral. Others who like more bass boom or bright trebble might like others, but for overall sound quality and neutral sound, these are hard to beat at their price. Running them with Rotel 971 CD amd 980 (981?) preamp and Tara Prime and Master cables.

Just picked up a 1998 model year for $200 cash and it's in great shape...just thought I'd let you know.  Check audiogon.com...they're going for around $300 on there.

Excellent amp with ample of power. Bass is crisp and deep. What separates this is its >1000 damping factor -- giving it the ability to precisely control starts and stops of low frequency signals. The result is crisp, tight bass. Mids and highs are excellent as well.
