Sony STR-DA50ES
I just got one of the newer units. Not a lot of improvement on the remote! But that won't stop me from giving it a 10! For performance at the price I got if for ($650 shipped), it's unbeatable - at least in my book!

Sony STR-DA50ES
Going to buy the Sony STR-DA50ES.. The Uncles quote of $650 is great but it is grey market. My local (35 miles away and not in stock) is $899 but have yet to try and bargain. I am nervous about grey market goods for warranty service etc.. But even assuming I can get the local store to sell to me for $800 seems like quite a difference.. Does anyone have a comment on the grey market approach?

Sony STR-DA50ES
I did not do a personal listening compare to Yamaha, and this is the reason that I evaluate as a 9 not a 10. There may exist something better that I have not yet heard... I don't know. From reading the other reviews, I found that they are both pretty good, and I wanted the Sony as my other components are Sony. I am a happy camper. I got my unit with the new remote from Jim@Oade.Com for a little less than Uncle Stereo's price.

Sony STR-DA50ES
Just received it on Friday 2/26, so far so good. Just another item that's going to be too complicated for my wife to operate. The LCD remote looks very interesting, too bad you can't see what's on the display. I wish Sony would build it so the display looked as clear/sharp as the picture in the brochure for the ES line of hardware.

Sony STR-DA50ES
Great receiver. Before the Sony i owned a Denon AVC3800 (almost twice the price of the Sony, in europe). Does anybody know at what frequency the subwoofer comes in (Denon is fixed at 80 hz), this when you select your speakers as small in the setup menu. Sony in Holland couldn't give me the answer.

How do you know if you have the new remote?

Sony STR-DA50ES
Chose yamaha 995 over the sony50es because of additional input connections and external inputs for future formats. Both receivers sounded great. Thought I would need to keep my old yamaha amp to power 15yr old B&Ws, but it actually sounded better straight out of the new amp. Finished out with energy rvs rears and ac300 center. I love this system! The sony is probably easier to use/setup and the yamaha remote is not spectacular, but I got used to it in about 2 days.

Sony STR-DA50ES
I got mine in Feb. from J&R Electronics in NY for about $650. They have a web page with contact info. It got to Utah in 3 days!

I sent my remote back to Sony and they were happy to do an upgrade kit to make it like the new ones. Just call the service number and complain that "It is hard to see and uses up batteries like crazy". They are very familiar with the complaint and treated me well. Except for the placement of the standby button, which I hit by mistake a couple times, I really like the remote. I can run all my other equipment, Sony, Zenith, Panasonic, Sharp, Philips with no problems. I can adjust sound field parametrs that change the sound imaging without having to leave my listening position.

The amp puts out great home theater and music sound. I paired mine with a Sony S300 DVD player and my DIY home theater speakers. It sounds clean at high volume without having to "work" hard. Overall, I think it is a great unit for the price and it can stand on its own against a lot of $2k+ "traditional" systems with fewer features. Some of my audophile friends are impressed, especially after they stopped whining about Sony and actually heard and tested it. Also, do they have a 5 year warranty? No!

Sony STR-DA50ES
While I generally have been a big fan of Sony products I feel I must let you know about a current miserable experience I am having with Sony.

In February I received my STR-DA50ES that I ordered from a reputable retailer during an out-of-town business trip. I did not have the opportunity to put it through its paces until March 18th when my home theater speaker system was installed. The receiver was unpacked and seemed to work well until the third day of use when the protection circuit triggered and would not reset.

After calling Sony they instructed me to take the receiver to my local authorized repair center. Without hesitation, my receiver was in the shop as the doors opened that Monday, March 22nd. Unfortunately, today marks the fifth full week my receiver has been awaiting repair. As I routinely called my service center they informed me that they were awaiting parts from Sony (some had arrived and others hadn't). Around April 14th I again called Sony to ask them what was occurring. The repair service rep apologized and said the remaining parts would be sent under "expedite" status to my repair center. Guess what, a week and a half and still no more parts.

I called Sony again today and the repair service rep essentially said there is nothing they can do. He stated that products under repair at factory authorized centers are allowed six weeks to be repaired before replacement is considered. Products that are sent directly to a Sony Regional Repair Center are allowed four weeks. Even worse, he went on to say that after such time it is the responsibility of the local repair center to contact the Sony regional technical representative to decide whether repair should continue or replacement is warranted.

Looks like I'm pretty much SOL. Sorry about the long message but I just spent close to $4,000 on Sony gear and I am extremely disappointed to discover that Sony provides such poor support for one of their "flagship" products (i.e. the ES line). I guess it should have been a clue that they went to market with a defective remote. To add insult to injury, I went to remove the Sony batteries from the remote (RM-TP501) and the damn things had already corroded all over the remote.

Just something to keep in mind as you make your purchasing decisions -- Sony may produce nice toys but heavens forbid they should fail. Buyer beware!

Sony STR-DA50ES
I had previously rated this receiver an 8 back on 3/1, but I'm now lowering it to a 6. The Sony service center in my area (this is a real Sony center) has had the remote twice, the first time it came back the LCD was brighter but it wouldn't control the receiver. They've now had it for three months and say it may be one to three months more (waiting on redesigned parts). They did offer to buy the receiver back for the price I paid for it, but I hate the thought of having to rewire everyting again.Lowering to a 6 just for all the grief.

Sony STR-DA50ES
I already tried on many receivers such as Denon and Yamaha.
The sound that sony gives beat the sound that produce by denon
and yamaha and especially the price is a lot more cheap. Moreover,
I never have any problem with the remote control same as many people
always complain. Highly recommend.

TIA for any responces.

Sony STR-DA50ES
I really don't understand why most of these reviews are against SONY and/or this receiver! SONY service centers may not be very helpful - are there any really good service centers!? The remote may not be very bright, but you can see it, right? The design is very sleek and overall performance is outsatnding! It really doesn't matter if it's 100W or 120W per channel, 3 or 5 year warranty, or if you got the upgraded remote... This receiver performs! Any faithful SONY fan would back me up.

Those who complain of this receivers lack of control over their Toshiba or Panasonic whatever, obviously don't have a clue! Why even consider these other brands? Ever heard of a SONY hair dryer or microwave? NO!!! Because they are dedicated hard-core audio/video experts!

STR-DA50ES is a fine piece!

Sony STR-DA50ES
Just picked this up as a open-box demo model from the Good Guys in California for $499. It came with no remote or docs, but just ordered the docs from Sony for $8 ($5, plus shipping and tax), and got the new Sony universal learning remote RM-VL900 - which is the first remote I've had that actually does do everything (or in a few cases, can be taught to). Downside on the DA50ES: It doesn't have a digital RCA-type input for my CD player (plenty of optical connections however), but my CD player is pre-optical. That's my only gripe after a week. Plenty of other connections: svideo, optical, dvd, video1-3. Great ADF - auto decode format - mode to switch between stereo TV and 5.1 DVDs.
