Sony STR-DA50ES
Great quality piece of equipment! Plenty of connections. Very good power. I'm completely satisfied with the receiver. The remote on the other hand is cool, but useless. It won't work with a Toshiba DSS, and the 'answer' I get from Sony is I'm SOL. It's not upgradeable. The manuals are both pretty poor. Very short and incomplete. Barely enough to operate the unit. Nevertheless, for $650, I don't see how I could expect much more.

Sony STR-DA50ES
Great value, easy hookup, easy to operate, terrific sound.....lousy remote (just trying to do too much with glitzy technology - bad execution with the dimly lit touchscreen). Fortunately, I have a Marantz RC2000-II programmable remote, so I have shelved the Sony remote - any serious tweaking can be done quickly (and more reliably!) from the front panel. For $650, you cannot go wrong. It is very quiet, doesn't run too hot, and there is lots of opportunity to customize EQ and other soundfield settings.

Sony STR-DA50ES
Excellent receiver, no recognizable distortion when volume is cranked up, not crazy about the remote that's why I wouldn't give it a 10.

Sony STR-DA50ES
2 weeks into 50ES:

Neg First:

1: Remote: Very dim almost BAD.. Good basic functions if you could see... Switch placement, standby etc. are poor causes one to power off when picked up wrong and getting back to the functions often requres multiple steps.

2: As a result of #1, I have twice powered the unit of and then on by accident then got a ... PROTECTOR FAN .. notification and had to let the uit sit for around 15 min vefore it would power back up. NO other Problem. I did not know the unit had a fan or does it?????? I called Sony about this and also questioned them as to Why the U.S. Site and the Canada site (www.sony.ca) highlighted different features since they are supposed to be the same units. Like, Fan cooled tranisistors and Super LEGATO amplifier what ever that is and of course they didn't know..

On the PLUS:
Features Yes, good sound yes, power yes, style yes, Value/Price Yes if you order through the net round 650 or so..... At MSRP of 1000.00 NO...

Have run only 5.1 and Pro Logic at this time. 5.1 Oh Yes, Pro Logic just like my Sony STRD 911 that I have had for 5 Years.

If not for the remote, and I don't want to spend 200 for one, this units most likely as good as it gets for the price and features and 5 year warranty.

110 Volt US version = 650-800 Dollars
220 Volt "euro" version = about 1500 dollars (cheapest price so far !)
anyone know where I can buy a 220 volt version for less in Europe, or, if I can get a 220v one in New York area ? Thanks much.

Sony STR-DA50ES
I haven't been able to get one of these yet, so I will reserve my review until
I get it. It seems Sony is going to fix the problem with the remote (according
to the rumors i've heard on the net) Sony has, however, temporarily stopped shipping the 50's NOT the 30's -- giving credability to the fact that the delays are because of the remote problems(dim display and voracious appetite for batteries). Personally I'm hoping for a docking station and a rechargable 9V battery pack for it.

Now the reason I'm sitting here typing is to reply to the questions of where to get one of these fine units for $650.00!! They can be had when new supplies come in from Japan from Uncles Stereo out of NYC also on the net for $649.00- its been a few weeks since I talked to them though or from the Oade Bros. out of Georgia for $625 + shipping from both stores - I'm waiting to get mine from my local dealer, I got them to match the 649 price I first got from Uncles. --Most stores probably wouldn't do that, but I've spent thousands of dollars at this store, on both my home and car stereo equipment. I live in a small town and they can ill afford to lose my business to the internet!!

--IMHO, theres nothing like your small-time local HiFi dealer, where if you have problem, all you have to do is bring your problem equipment in and drop it in their laps -- In many cases you can even get loaner if it has to be shipped out for repairs. So give em a fighting chance, shop on the internet first, and then see how close they can get to your best price, even if they won't match it exactly, I bet they can come close - and later on if you have questions or problems you won't get left on terminal hold when you call!!! DEFINATLEY worth a few extra dollars.

Well, that's my 2 cents. - CIAO!

Sony STR-DA50ES
This is a great player for the price. I like the feature of each function (input) having it's own default genre. That saves a great deal of changing every time you change device. This is about "hands-free" of a player as you can get. After initial setup, you just about have nothing to do except choose the device. The remote really is dark. If it were better lit, it would be much more functional. It's very difficult to use at night. Daytime isn't too bad. But I was aware of the remote problem when I purchased the unit. I am NOT disappointed. It's great.

I recently bought this receiver and I am very satisfied about it. Especially about the installation and finetuning of it. I only have one question, what is the best setting for Dynamic Ranger Compressor Off of STD (standard) ?

I have had this receiver for 2 months now and I am very pleased with it's performance. My only complaint is the remote, you can't program it, it is hard to see and you need to be fairly close to get it to see the receiver. I have a sony 200 disk cd changer and that connected to the reciever allows cd-text information to be displayed on the remote. I do like the control that the receiver provides for the LFE (low frequency effects) channel as well as dynamic range compression (I live in an apartment building!). I think it is a tremendous value for the money. I found it for $350 off list.

Where can I get this unit for $649.00 off the net. The cheapest I found it for is $811.50 delivered to the front door from Onecall.com but $649.00 to my front door sounds much better.

Sony STR-DA50ES
This is an outstanding receiver for the money. Sony has
really outdone Yamaha on this one. The receiver has a lot
of power, Dolby Digital, dts, plenty of dsp modes, and more.
This thing beats the hell out of the more expensive Sony
DA90ESG!! That model has less features than the 50ES and
costs a lot more, for example it doesn't have dts and this
one does!!!
The reason I don't give it a 10 is that awful remote control.
I have never used a bigger piece of crap in my life. I have
owned the unit for 3 weeks now and in those 3 weeks, I have
gone through 3 sets of batteries!!!! AND, I have to get
really close to the unit in order for the remote to be able
to get info from the receiver. AND, the remote comes
pre-programmed and so it can't learn. I bought the
panasonic A-110 DVD (Love it!!!) and the remote doesn't
even control the DVD very well!!!!!!! AND, I can't see the
screen at all!!!!!! Very poor design by Sony!! Trying to
be too fancy and not remembering what is
important!!!!
Overall, You can't beat this receiver!!!!!! Just go out
and buy a Marantz RC2000 to control it!!!!! You'll be able
to afford it with the great price tag on this unit!!!!
Good luck. If you have any q's you can email me at

Sony STR-DA50ES
I just bought this receiver. The remote is terrible. Sony did however fix the lighting problem. I don't know about the issue with batteries dying in a short amount of time. Since, I only have owned it for 1 day. The biggest problem is the remote only controls some of my components. As for the receiver, the power and features are top notch! If you pay $650 like I did, then it is an excellent receiver for the money. I previously owned a strde915 model. It had a learning remote, identical to the 80es receiver. This remote is a learning model and can control all of your functions on the receiver and other components. I recommend picking up this remote for short money compared to the Marantz RC2000 markII

Sony STR-DA50ES
Picked up one of these babies yesterday. Great sound, elegant design. One of the post-recall units: the remote is a lot brighter than the unit I saw in the showroom. Nonetheless, it's still too dark. 3-year warrantee card. Manual states that output is 120 watts x 5 channels into 8 ohms, 100 watts x 5 channels into 4 ohms. (I thought power usually goes up when feeding a lower impedance load.)

The remote takes care of much of what S-link would do. When you select DVD, for example, it switches the receiver to DVD, selects multichannel soundfields, turns the TV on, switches to Video 1, turns on the DVD player, selects play. Problem is if you have a component video connection to video 2, you're out of luck.

My biggest gripe is that the remote insists on sending a turn-on command to Sony televisions every time a function is selected. Pick Tuner, MD, or CD, and the TV clicks on. You can then select TV and turn the television off, but if you try to get back into Tuner mode, the TV's on again. I guess you're okay if you have a non-Sony TV, but I find this extraordinarily annoying.
