Sony STR-DA50ES

I recently went to a CES show that demonstrated the newest ES Receiver from Sony. This receiver retails for $1000. It has
Dolby Digital and DTS with all DSP modes processed in 32 bit. It has a wealth of power for its price and size and has excellent
sound in it's price category. I just think about how only one year ago they didn't even make a dolby digital receiver in this prie
range and now they have become far more competitive with Yamaha by creating the worlds first Dolby Digital/DTS with 32 bit
DSP for $1000. This unit smokes and kicks the hell out of the Kenwood 2090.
Best of all, I found this fine product for $649 shipped to my door with a 5 year warranty !!!
IMHO, this receiver currently represents the best value of the market !!!
But don't take my word for it, go, listen, and be amazed !!!

Rating of 8 for overall performance (I reserve the rating of 10 for the Yamaha DSP A1 of course)

RAting bumped up to 9 for the value it represents at $649 shipped to your door !!!!

The very best of all.
Sony does it again and beat out the Yamaha DSP-1, too pricey and damn heavy.
Await for the DVD 7700/DTS comes out.

The Yamaha is more heavy than the Sony becuase of better build quality which attributes to a larger power supply, bigger heat sinks and 2 more channels. This yields a higher current power amp and cleaner and more dynamic power overall. Not to mention the Yamaha DSP A1 has better D/A convertors and processors. The price difference is because of higher quality.
While the Sony STRDA 50ES is a great receiver and a great value, it is not in the same vein or breed as the Yamaha DSP A1 and should therefore not be directly compared.

This one has no DSP sound fields as other AC-3 receivers.
That's a shame for this kind of price.

Rather wait for the new Yamaha RX-V2095 w/ DD/DtS.

I believe Yamaha is better in sound quality and built.

I support Yamaha all the way, but this receiver is not half bad. It sounded pretty damn good and it held out all the pros of DD and DTS. It was also very clean. Still I would rather buy a Yamaha RX-V795 (should be coming out in about 2 weeks) than the STR-DA50ES. Features are better and DSP Settings are better for a lower price. Can't say about the amplifier though since they change them every year. Also the DSP-A1 weighs alot for a Massive Torrodial Power Supply, Large Capacitors, and just alot of amplifying power. Although you can't credit the weight to the Heat Sinks since all Yamaha Amplifiers use Aluminum Heat Sinks which weigh close to, nothing. Although their ES Line may be alot better than their standard, I would still go with Yamaha Receivers. I currently own a RX-V793 RX-V2092 and a DSP-A1 and the only reason I thought of buying a Sony Receiver is because I have a Sony DSS Receiver, Sony ES CD Player, Sony DVP-S7000, and a NEW SONY WEGA. Sony is really good for TV's and Video Supplies, but I don't like my CD Player too much. I have a Sony CDP-XA20ES, and it sounds about as good as a Yamaha CD Player (which is pretty damn bad).

It sounds ok altough I am not overly impressed. I am extremly dissapointed in the remote! It has no learning capability or macros. It will not work my cable box. The owners manuals might as well be non-exsistent and when you call sony they know less then I do. Anyone with a sugestion on what I should buy write me as I returning this.

After reading the previous reviews. I wonder if anybody actually owns one of these. First, it is 120 Watts per channel. Second, the remote will work a cable box and it is a very cool remote. Looks like a Palm Pilot PDA. Works very well. As for listening to music, one button kills the Soundfield Procesing and puts ypu stright into two channel mode. If someone is getting a five year warranty, they should check the card-it says three year. I have only owned this for 4 weeks, so stay tuned for further review. As it stands now, the sound is great and the build quality is very good. I have owned nothing but Yamaha until now. Just retired a RX1130 (Clean Power). Would have purchased another one, but they didn't offer DTS yet. Was not going to shell out 2k+ for the DSP-A1.

Question for 50ES/30ES owners. Does this unit remember set-up parameters when switching between inputs? Previous ES recievers did not do this, and I was curious to see if Sony fixed the problem.

Well...Called Sony and they say it is a misprint in the manual and the DA50ES is only 100 watts a channel. I stand corrected. They said they will pull the arms off the human that is responsible for the manuals and offered me a new car if I did not tell anyone. Said no thanks.

Just got it, excellent sound, easy setup. Only complaint is with the remote it ain't bad it just is not as good as the rest of the system. LCD backlight is to dark, dedicated volume button ( seperate from touchscreen )is great, the problem is no dedicated channel buttons, large mistake. You have to activate the touchscreen ( touch it) then look for the chan+, chan- buttons then press them, big waste of time. Only has the most basic functions of a non Sony brand VCR. Should have been a learning remote with macro capability. Still for $650 there is nothing else out there that even comes close.

Forgot to tell you that when I called Sony about the Watts misprint, they also said that the warranty card that came with mine that said three years, was wrong too. It is a five-year warranty. Also agree with previous statement about the backlight on remote being too dim. I still think it is a capable remote. (Still accidently kill the power to receiver when I pick up remote and hit button on top)

I also have a Kenwood 1090 and after comparing them for quite a while I decided that the Kenwood has better imaging especially while listening in stereo, but the sony has better bass response. Having the DTS option is a plus, and as for the remote, it is neat, but I just used my learning remote to get all of the Sony's codes and it works fine. For way less than $1000 though it is a great deal.

I love the receiver itself, clean power, good functionality, easy speaker configuration setup, etc. The remote is not what it was hyped up to be. It won't run a Primestar box, Harmon Kardon cd-player, or have full functions for any dvd player except Sony. Very disappointing. Also, the display is too dark, the standby button is too easy to accidentally hit, and the contrast dial is too easy to accidentally hit. Plus I have already gone through a whole package of batteries. . .and yes I have it set for 1 minute standby. Also, the bidirectional features work sporadically. You have to be quite close to the receiver for the receiver to update the sound field levels information (such as balance, center and rear levels, etc). If you get too far away. . .say about 5 feet, these functions grey out on the remote. Even though they do sometimes operate the proper functions on the receiver when pressed, the display does not update to show the changes unless you continually hit reload. I am very disappointed with the remote. Although I found many faults with the remote, I do like the functions it does when it is doing them properly. I do like the layout of the buttons for the dvd player, television, and vcr functions. If the display were improved and made brighter, it would be much better.

Thats my 2 cents worth.

Volume movement by remote is not granular enough at low volumes.
Sonics are good.
Input connectivity is good.
Remote lacks many current brands/model capability, can't be learned.
On-screen s/w capability would resolve many issues with the front panel and remote controls too.
Unable to listen to or watch one source while recording another except you can listen to audio while taping video.
