I wondered why this beautiful cluster was not on the list. It's the best cluster on the Messier chart... Franklin W.

I agree. I was just star hopping around one night using my Sky atlas 2000 and my 10" dob. M11 is an unimpressive looking cluster on the map, but when I looked at it in my scope it was quite impressive. Real rich and tight for an open cluster.

Wild Duck Cluster
The Orion Nebula is a treasure to all astronomers in that
it is bright, viewable and detailed in 'scopes of even the
most modest aperture. It is extraordinarily photogenic and
stands as the most qualified emissary of the universe's
beauty and elegance. These reasons and more are what keep
me returning, time and time again, to view my favorite nebula
and it is, in short, why I believe that the Orion Nebula is
THE most spectacular celestial object [viewable from earth]
period.

M11 is not the Orion Nebula. But thanks anyway.
Wild Duck Cluster
Oops, I created a new entry for this one, before I saw the old one. But here are my comments:

M13 is bright and globular, but for shear excellence of astonishment, nothing beats M11.

The complexity and clarity of this cluster staggers the mind and captures the attention, leaving the viewer in awe for days/weeks/months/a lifetime.

It's motivational for the young, captivating for the mid-life, and spiritually-inspring for the blue-haired. It's enough to turn your blue hair grey, or give you juices for the millenia.

Why am I so raptured and captured by this simple object?

Take a look and you'll see why!

I use an Orion XT8 dob viewed through a meade 26mm super plossl, 400 series. Of course with the Sky Wizard it's trivial to find, but even without a DSC you need to know where this one is.

It'll get your girlfirend ready or your boyfriend relaxed. It'll give your wife respect for your abilities, or make your husband stay home on Friday's. M11 won't turn your life around, but it will give you a creak in your neck because you'll stare at it for so long.
