Akira was one of the anima that I cut my teeth on, and I still love it. While it is very long, it carries the story well through out the entire movie. While its colors were not as vibrant as some of the newer anima (BGC, Ghost in the Shell) I think the darker setting gave it a "gritier" feel that worked well.

On the bitch side; I think that all the screaming of names gets a little old. More than once I looked around, wondering why he was yelling out the name of a large North American Continent, but then I got serious and over it. Other than that, the only thing I would have liked to seen more of was charecter development for the military leader (General? Colonel? It's been a while, forgive me).

On the up side, I loved the laser beam weapons. Finally, an accurate representation of lasers. No explosion, just clean, precise cuts... and a major drain on power.

Here's a clue for you people who don't understand Akira. It's about the dangers of fucking with what you don't understand. It's about playing god and falling on your face. It has the theme of a new and more frightening Frankenstein. It's about the loss of innocence and the seduction of absolute power. It's about the eternal bond of a true friendship. By the way, they did show Akira, more than once. He was the little kid who appeared before the strange children in the end. They said "hi" to him. It was the best peice of story telling I've seen, in or out of film, in a long time.

I don't like the numbers you give for ratings. Actually I believe this movie deserves a -3. This movie SUCKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A complete mess. It lacks coherence and narrative drive, and is poorly paced and plotted. The actual animation itself is fine, but the entire package is one of the most overrated pieces of anime I have yet seen. Avoid.

I can never forget the first time I saw Akira. It has something special, a compeling/fascinating quality, that I have never got over. I love the complexity, the action and the twisted revelations it draws from you.
