Celestron Ultima 30mm
For $100 or less, this eyepiece is at the top of its class.
The FOV seems wider than advertised. The true field of view is
just as large as the 35mm version, so why bother with it?
Excellent light transmission, very bright images. Stars are
sharp pin-points right to the edge, except on very fast
newtonians. On an F4.5 dob/newt, they perform better than
high-end Plossls.
Winged eyeguard may not appeal to everyone, but you can simply
fold it down if you don't like it.

Exit pupil in a 10" f/4.5 is ~6.66mm. Images are quite bright and contrast is good. Slight field curvature notice at this f ratio, but not distracting. Stars holdup well to the edge. Nice eyepiece for hunting down faint objects.

Possibly the best low power 1.25" eyepiece available. I have a 30mm Speer-Waler 2" that I use more than this one though. Still nice to have for using 1.25" filters which are more readily available (and MUCH less expensive) than 2" filters.

Celestron Ultima 30mm
Hi I have a celestron ultima 30mm, and I love it. It is the best low power eyepiece have. I use it mainly on a meade etx, sometimes on a meade 10 inch dob. It is extremly sharp. It is quite a lot better than the meade 26mm that came with the etx.I am considering purchasing the celestron 35mm ultama in the future. If anyone knows anything about the performance of the ultima 35mm, please let me know at Tommeehonda@webtv.net

Excellent eyepiece! Both my reflector and refractor have 2" focussers, and I have owned a variety of long-focal length eyepieces...but this 1.25" eyepiece is the one that I keep coming back to. Through it, the views are simply superb! Across the entire FOV, the sharpness, resolution and contrast are stunning. The eye relief is perfect (overly long eye relief takes the joy away from a lot of long-focal length eyepieces). Moreover, it weighs about the same as my medium- and short-focal length EP's and therefore there is never any need to rebalance the scope when switching EP's. This one is a keeper.

Best low-power 1.25" eyepiece that I'm aware of. Used it with 8" Ultima and loved both. Very sharp with superior contrast and light through-put -- good edge performance as well. Friends also use it as great low-power choice for binoviewers.

This eyepiece is amazing! The eye relief is perfect and views are sharp all the way the edge. The stated field of view for this eyepiece is 50 degrees, but it seems much larger. I would guess that it is around 55 degrees. The fit and finish of this eyepiece are flawless and the coatings are excelent. Eyepieces don't get much better than this.

I agree with all of the praise showered on this eyepiece. If you're restricted to 1.25" oculars and looking for a low power, this is a great way to go. Sharp optics, fine construction, light weight, and inexpensive! What more could you ask? A bonus is that the eye relief is just right - fine for eyeglass wearers, but not too much that positioning the eye becomes difficult. The only weakness is the winged rubber eyeguard which I find to be ineffective, and which tends to get knocked off too easily (but that still doesn't keep this eyepiece from being a "10"). Someday I'll replace the eyeguard on mine with a generic substitute... Finally, I can't wait to get two of these into a bino-viewer.

My favorite of the Ultima line, followed closely by the 18mm. Sharp to the edge, great contrast! A pleasure to use.

I had the 35mm Ultima and liked it but sold it recently because of minor kidney-beaning. The 30mm also has very generous eye relief and takes a bit of getting used to for non-glasses wearers. You have to keep your distance from the eye lens. But it doesn't exhibit kidney-beaning, unlike the 35mm.

An excellent value at about $90. Not as impressive as expensive premium 2" wide-field eyepieces, but I give it a 9 for the value.

I purchased my 30mm ultima 2 years ago and had never looked through one.
Well, after my first time out with it I have loved it ever since. It is one of my most used eyepieces. My friend wanted to buy it from me, but I said no way, go buy your own!!

A really fine eyepiece. I bought two to use in a Tele Vue Binoviewer. They are great: small, light weight, delivering crisp, clear images, and very easy to use with good eye relief. Nice wide angle eyepiece as well when used alone.

The only eyepiece I give a 10. The reason is cost vs performance. I sold this one, and regret it. The fov in mine was larger than 50 degrees, more like 55. Stars were sharp, lots of contrast. If you have a scope with a 1.25" focuser this is a must own.

Outstanding views at 42x with a 72'fov on my 5" SCT. This eyepiece is clear and sharp and is always the one I end up going to after trying a 40 or a 25. Also it doubles very well with the Ultima 2x barlow. Its nice to have a view through such a large eyeglass at 80x. Often when I'm searching for galaxies and just seem to be loosing my way around, I pop this ep in and everything in the area stands out. Where once I was lost, I now have found my way. It excels on wide clusters where it shows every star pinpoint and crisp. Best low power ep in my box. edz.

I have a clone of the Ultima 30, a Eudiascopic 30mm. The eye relief is fine, except it seems to increase when barlowed, so that's why it's a 9. Not perfect. However, it's super sharp and bright, and while I could detect M51 in this eyepiece I couldn't see it in a Brand X Chinese 25mm Plössl. Not much of a fight, but I had only 40x with the 30mm and 48x with the 25mm, which would suggest I'd see it better with the 25mm. Other nice features: The filter threads are really nice and my UHC filter screws all the way in (not just 1/4 of a turn like sometimes), though this may be only in Baader's Eudiascopic version. It happens to have the same outside diameter for the large barrel as my Ultima barlow, which works well with it. It's MUCH smaller and more compact than the 35mm Ultima, which can force you to adjust the balance. A great eyepiece, and a definite keeper!

i have used the 30mm ultima now for about a month on 3 observing sessions. i won't get into all the tecknical specs of this ep' just to say that for less than a $100 this is a great ep's fun to use performs very good worth getting.thanks bob hart

I have this eyepiece now since a feew weeks in use with my TV Ranger, and adopted it as my favourite low power wide field EP. It provides me with sharp, contrasty views also for birding, and is an excellent overall performer.
Maybe, that the Naglers and Pentaxes out there are better performers, but in comparison e.g. to my 20mm TV Ploessl or 11mm TV Ploessl in terms of sharpness, it comes very close to them.
The reason, why I give a 10 is its price and well craftmanship. In my opinion a $ worthy piece of glass and metal

This is the best low power true 1.25” eyepiece I’ve used. Views are very sharp and bright with excellent contrast. Perhaps because of the large lens, it feels like a much bigger eyepiece, but is actually pretty small and light. The stated AFOV is 52 degrees, but the eyepiece somehow produces a wider visual effect. In comparisons with the Meade 24.5mm Superwide, the Ultima provided brighter, clearer views that more than compensated for the Meade’s wider AFOV. Great value for the money.

Oh, I liked this one.
Contrasty, knife sharp and x-on eye relief.
But, when I compared the Ultima 30mm with the Nexstar 32mm on my short focus apocromat, I wasn't able to observe any great visual difference.
Maybe on a longer focal length scope I would have seen a gerater difference???
Anyhow, I ended up by buying the Nexstar at $48, and are quite happy with that.
