Despite the low rating that this store recieved,
I decided to pay them a personal visit to see for
myself. After waiting about half an hour to talk
to their telescope guy, I was told that the though
the telescope I wanted was in stock, it was "not
possible" to see it. The telescopes that they did
have on display were in shabby condition: mounts
were in pieces on the floor, protective caps were
missing and they all had an over all appearance of
abuse and neglect. The owners of this camera shop
seem quite annoyed that they should have to sell
any telescopes at all let alone deal with any
the people who pay them for their trouble. I
suppose that is why they have such an extensive
web site -- so they won't have to deal with
cusomers!

I am new to astronomy, but fairly well-versed in mail orders. Not all mail order companies are willing to go to the trouble of international orders (even though 'mail,' and even more so, 'Internet mail,' has always been 'international'), so Woodland Hills receives high marks from me just for keeping up this part of their service.


They also receive a high mark for providing useful information, not just pushing for a sale. They freely {before I ordered} gave advice that I trust will be useful as I continue learning more about astronomy and the products used. Mark 'Astroman1103' offered the information I needed and I happily gave him a $4000 order.


The only reason I am giving WHC a 9 on this review is because of their e-mail. After placing the order, I had several other questions (most importantly, though my card was credited, I had received no delivery notification) and several messages were 'lost.' Fearing the worst, I called, and talked with Mark directly. Again, much encouraged...very well done. Polite, quick, knowledgeable; I want to make this rating a 10.


I'll conclude by saying that the service is very good, the speed of e-mail not, but according to Mark the order was sent the same day it was received and I hope to following this review up with a higher mark when the merchandise arrives. If all goes well, I'll be ordering from WHC again.

I live in LA and have visited Woodland Hills Camera probably 4 or 5 times to make a purchase. They have always been attentive to my needs and very professional in their dealings. I'm not so sure they have extensive knowledge of scopes though, but if you know what you want they are a very good place to shop. I'd have no hesitiation recommending anyone to them and will probably buy from them again in the future.

I bought a C-11 OTA and a G-11 polar scope. The C-11 OTA was priced with Pocono's price but the polar scope was 30% more probably due to the scarceness.

The astro expert there was very helpful.

I purchased a Tele Vue 101 there and some accessories during several visits. They were courteous, helpful, and the products were in stock. I was interested in one particular (expensive) product that they had in stock, but after some discussion they recommended a less expensive alternative which I am now happily using. I will shop there again and I have no trouble recommending them to others. (They do need to tidy up the telescope display though.) Also, I had to return items on two occasions. They were accepted back without question.

I recently visited this store to see if they had in stock a particular eyepiece I was looking for. There seemed to be only one person the staff that was particularly knowledgeable regarding astronomy. When I was able to speak with this person, he was very helpful. They had a complete stock of eyepieces from TeleVue. What finally sold me was they offered the best price in the area by a lot. Overall, I would give them a 9. I left the store feeling like I had gotten a great deal and would definitely go back.

Email follow up : 8 (slow, although access by phone excellent)

Beware: Saw what I wanted on their web site. Phoned and the person taking my order told me a different price, higher of course. When I mentioned that the web site indicated a lower price, he made me wait while he brought it up on his computer, as if I would lie to him. He told me they would honor the price. We finished the transaction.

What arrived was partially brand new and part that looked used or from a store display. The portion that wasn't new, was just thrown loose into the box with no attempts to try and pack or protect it. One portion of it came apart but was easily fixed. I decided to keep it rather than send it back as it was in usable condition and would probably get the "use" marks within a few weeks. In addition since they were not honorable enough to ship new equipment that was sold as new equipment, what would they do if I complained and sent it back? (Brings to mind the joke about the Cafe and returning your meal only to have the cook spit on it and send it back out.)

The only reason they got a 3 instead of a zero their lack of honor was because they did not ship via UPS, they shipped FedEx Ground!

Great staff, very nice helped me pick out the perfect telescope and eyepieces for my husbands birthday. They also had the best prices, i had checked out some other stores prices first and found them to be the most reasonable all around. Everything I wanted was in stock and shiped the same day. I did't get a good price when I bought my bogen head from them. They charged
me with the list price. I didn't know much about tripods and heads.
Now I feel I could save $50 or more. Certainly not the best prices.

I found the staff to be very knowledgable, and extreemly helpful.I got my eyepeices in very quikly. I got all of the help I needed and they were very quik in answering my e-mails. After searching the web for sometime I found their site to have a great variety of equipment to serve my needs as well as agreable prices. I would like to do busness with them again.

I've had good and bad experiences there. Recently I purchased two eyepieces and they charged me a higher price than they listed in their own Sky and Telescope ad. I went back and got a refund, but that was a hassle and a bit underhanded, devious, shifty, dodgy, dishonest, dishonorable, deceitful, double-dealing, duplicitous, Janus-faced, two-faced, double-faced, double-tongued, beguiling, deceitful, fallacious, fraudulent, deceptive, misleading, and false. I wasn't happy. I send most of my business to Pocono now.

I took a chance and bought a demo telescope (ST80) at a great price. The scope and mount arrived, not in original boxes, but well packed. The eyepiece was an upgrade from the standard issue, the focuser lacked the lock screw and the finder scope lacked dust caps. With closer examination I found a chipped lens in the eyepiece. One call to Sara at Woodland Hills resolved every problem. I received a Park eyepiece and dust caps within three days. Sara had Celestron send the focuser parts. The scope star tested nicely and with Woodland Hill's prompt action I now have a decent scope at a wonderful price. Yes, these problems should have been caught on the front end, however once brought to the attention of this company, all was made right very quickly. I feel the test of a business is how effectivly problems are resolved, even with small dollar transations. I feel very comfortable with these people, especially Sara, and will do business with Woodland Hills again.
