TeleVue Nagler Type 4 12mm
Well worth the money, it's bright, clear to the edge, and has great eye relief in my 44" f/10 refractor. When I origionaly tested this eyepiece in the daytime I had major blackouts and kidney bean effect, but once I used it at night it turned around my opinion. While looking at the orion nebula I was easily able to take in the entire field. I also heard some complaints about the click stop being to loose from other observers, mine was quite tight and always stayed in the position I chose. Mine is only two weeks old, so it is possible that they may have corrected the click stop problem recently. Tele Vue has corrected virtually all problems associated with Nagler with this eyepiece. If you own this one it will be in your focuser ALOT!

TeleVue Nagler Type 4 12mm
If you have a TV-85 this is THE eyepiece to have. Sharp to the edge, wonderful contrast. I did notice some black-out, but using the instajust fixed it. The instajust is also tighter than mentioned in the other reviews because it won't move when I pick up the eyepiece. The best views I've had of M3 and M13 are in an MK-67 with the 12mm. When you go back to other eyepieces you feel like you're looking down a straw. Highly recommended.

TeleVue Nagler Type 4 12mm
Yes its expensive, and yes it weighs almost as much as my OTA, butwhat spectacular views! I wear glasses and this is the only eyepiece I've got that I can use just as easily with them on or off. This one is well worth the money and dealing with its weight!

TeleVue Nagler Type 4 12mm
After thinking about it for some time and reading the reviews here and elsewhere, I took a gamble and traded in my venerable 14mm Radian on a 12mm T4. I won.

I'm about as far removed from an eyepiece expert as you can get but I know what I like when I see it. The 12mm T4 isn't as good as the stupendous 31 Nagler T5, but its pretty darned good. Works well in my TV-85 and 12.5 Portaball with no coma noticable. It's sharp to the edge and has excellent contrast. Didn't think I'd really notice or use the 82 degree apparent field. WRONG! The wide field allows me to boost power on DSO's while still properly frame the object. The result is a bigger image with blacker background. Must be experienced. M13 through the Portaball was, well, the best I have ever seen; a concentrated splash of stars with outermost completely resolved against a jet-black background.

Rated a "9" due to the fussy eye position (much fussier that the 31 Nagler), but that ain't bad. If you don't use glasses and funds permit, buy the 12mm T4 and skip the Radians at this focal length.

TeleVue Nagler Type 4 12mm
Nagler 12T4 is a good overall EP no doubt especially when compared to other Naglers. But it is not excellent. There are trade-offs for color, contrast, brightness and sharpness. Direct comparison to Pentax XL shows false color on the Moon. Nagler Moon image is brownish gray whereas the Pentax is pure grays. Pentax doesn't have 82 degree FOV though. Direct comparison to Docter 12.5 90 degree FOV on M13 shows that Nagler 12 is not as sharp. The Docter was able to resolve more core stars than the Nagler. Stars in general are tighter pinpoints on-axis in the Docter. Nagler's stars are slight fuzzy disks but consistent across the whole field. The trade-off is the Docter has significant coma at the edge of field when used in a f/5 scope. The coma starts at 30% out from center of field and gets worse to the edge in my scope. But on axis it is much sharper than Nagler. In slower scopes Nagler would have less of an advantage. Both fields appeared relatively flat. Contrast appears the same in both EPs, but when you consider that the Nagler has more power it should appear higher in contrast, implying the Docter is truely higher in contrast. It is perceptably brighter too than Nagler on faint objects. The Nagler is heavier and costs 10-20% more. The Nagler fit and finish is more professional looking. The Docter is acceptable for a top quality ep. Kidney beaning is bad if you are too close to the Nagler whereas the Docter won't kidney bean or blackout at all. My biggest dislike is the Nagler's 2" skirt over the 1.25" center. My 2" focuser with 1.25" adapter interferes with the 2"skirt and won't seat correctly. This will only allow the use of the 2" skirt without the adapter. That would be fine but it is not parfocal with the 1.25" center and is far from parfocal with all other EPs I own including other Naglers. Why?? Bad design in my opinion. They should have picked one format and made it parfocal with the other Naglers. Try the Docter on slower f-ratio scopes and save $. Note: the Docter can be used with either a 1.25" or 2" focuser but has no skirt. The 1.25" position is parfocal with other EP's.

TeleVue Nagler Type 4 12mm
This is a good eyepiece. It has a lot of virtues (82 degree wide apparent FOV, very well made, etc.). However, the price is quite steep, and I don't find the contrast to be that spectacular. I think a simpler, less expensive eyepiece could do the job without the refinement. On planets an orthoscopic will do a better job(and don't forget the radians!). Of course, I realize most people don't buy this eyepiece for planets (and in my opinion, shouldn't). BUT this is a FINE mid-power deepsky eyepiece. Just don't buy it for planets. And of course, being a nagler, it is heavy and could throw off the balance of some scopes (namely dobs). As for me, I want a radian.

TeleVue Nagler Type 4 12mm
I was blessed to purchase this wonderful eyepiece as like new on the used market for a decent price. Yes, it was still expensive, but WOW, what an awesome mate to my C8 f/10. I have used with 1.25" and 2" diagonals, 6.3 reducer, on both planetary and DSOs with great results. This hunk, and I mean hunk, of glass is the absolute best eyepiece that I have looked through! My other eyepieces are feeling rejected. A great plus is that it allows me to continue using my 1.25 filters, even though I use it mostly with the 2" diagonal. Just beware, this sucker is heavy and will definitely mess up the perfect balance of fork-mounted scopes.

I love the FOV but the eye position is a bit tricky due to kidney beaning. I don't like the insta-adjust. Its a pain. Optically, you can't beat Televue eyepieces.

TeleVue Nagler Type 4 12mm
A friend of mine had bought one and I used it in my 7" (180mm) Russian made Mak-Newt and was totally blown away (and so was he) so I got one a week later. The views are stunning especially the Swan Neb. with an OIII filter. A friend with a 25" scope (pegasus mirror) looked through it and was totally impressed. He was rather shocked when he realised he was looking through a 7" scope. Great brightness and contrast. I have put alot of EP's in this scope but this is THE one. Looking at doubles or DS objects, its the cats meow. Eye placement is more critical then other EP's but the views are worth it 100 times over to have to excercise a little bodily co-ordination for the views it provides.......I could go on but its all been said. A great EP. (side note: I hate being crtitcal of other peoples opinions, but giving this EP a rating of a 5 or 6 is totally unrealistic. I have yet to meet someone who has looked through this EP in my mak-newt who wasnt totally impressed with the excellent views)

TeleVue Nagler Type 4 12mm
I do not like to give 10 in my reviews. This eyepiece is great, I love it! I give it a 10 overall and because I have owned almost every type of eyepiece you can think of, Vixen, Meade, Celestron, University Optics, Harry Seibert, Pentax, it gives better views than any of these eyepieces. Buy one, you will be glad you did.

I own a Televue 85, which I use primarily for birdwatching, but also for viewing objects in space. I have eight Televue nagler, radian and panoptic eyepieces. My favorite is the Nagler Type 4 12 mm. The eye relief is sufficient for me to use it with eyeglasses. The optics are fantastic. If I could own only one eyepiece, this would be it.

The light throughput, clarity and resolution of this eyepiece is great, fabulous. However, a black-out effect is quite noticeable and drives me nuts sometimes. You have to learn how to keep your eye positioning with this eyepiece if you've never dealt with this before. But, the pluses outwiegh the negatives and I've kept this one.

TeleVue Nagler Type 4 12mm
This is my favorite and most used eyepiece on my 102mm Apochromatic Refractor and 10" F5 Dobsonian. It is sharp right to the edge and eye placement is easy compared to other similar eyepieces. I like the Instadjust. I just pull it out 3 clicks and it's perfect. Contrast is excellent as dim, hard to find objects are easier to see in this eyepiece then any of the many others I own. Highly Recommended!

TeleVue Nagler Type 4 12mm
This superb eyepiece has replaced the 14mm Pentax XL as my most used occular in 16" dob. Excellent resolution and contrast plus instadjust eyeguard,17mm eye relief and 82 degree AFOV makes this a perfect medium power eyepiece under just about any observing contitions.I can easily sketch DSO's even without drive system.I was a little concerned about blackouts, but has been no problem at all.Definitely worth the cost for the serious observer.

This is my standard medium power eyepiece in my Takahashi TOA 130 APO , yielding 83X. It gives very bright and outstandingly sharp images of DSO's. I love the way it performs on open star clusters , such as M35 , M37 , and M46. Sharp stellar images across the entire field of view.
