Harry Siebert Optics Ultra 9mm, 1.25 inch
I spent a great deal of time comparing eye pieces before I decided to purchase one of these wonderful works of craftsmanship. I was fortunate enough to find quite a few folks with some of the "high end" eye pieces that were kind enough to let me borrow them. I was on the verge of spending the money on one of the high priced items when I decided to call Siebert Optics for some information. Imagine my surprise when I wound up talking with Harry Siebert!

After my conversation with Harry, I decided that he knew so much about optics that I really couldn't go wrong trying one of his products, especially with his easy return policy.

All I can say is that there will definitely be more of this line of eye pieces joining my collection before long. The image is crisp, clear and incredibly flat from edge to edge. That's in my light polluted home location where limiting naked eye magnitude is generally around 1.5 - 2. The views of globular clusters are beautifully resolved and open clusters like the Butterfly and Wild Duck are just amazing!

The construction of the eye piece itself is quite solid. Yet, it doesn't weigh as much as you'd think. You definitely know your holding a lot of glass, but it's not as heavy as it looks. It's just full of suprises from fit/finish to the views provided.

The only reason I don't rate this a 10 is because I believe there is always room for improvement. So does Harry, by the way. That's what will keep me coming back for more of his product.

Dave

This is a great eyepiece that probably gets more use than any other in my collection. I simply love it! It offers a really wide field of view along with great eye relief. The image is very flat and it performs very well with my fast F4.5 dob. It won't be long before I'll be adding another Siebert eyepiece to the collection.

I purchased a pair of these eyepieces for a large binocular telescope, but was forced to return them because I did not have enough in-travel in the prism diagonals of my binocular design. I tested the eyepieces with a 6" f/4 newtonian I have had for decades, even though I could not get them to focus on my 12 1/2" f/6 binocular scope. It has been cloudy for weeks, so have not looked at the stars yet, but based on terrestrial observing, I have the following comments:

The view is sharp edge to edge with no noticeable lateral color. Distortion is zero nearly to the edge, then at the last 5 degrees or so of field I notice an abrupt pincushion distortion. The field of view is almost identical to my 19mm TeleVue Panoptic, which is advertised at 68 degrees. I would say that the ultras have a 65 degree useable field of
view, throughout which the image quality is excellent. The design appears to be similar to the 10 mm Antares Speers-WALER, which is essentially a 20mm or so eyepiece permanently matched to a negative field lens (barlow). There is nothing inherently wrong with this design, but in my case I can't afford the in-travel required. I suspect anyone who uses a 1 1/4 inch prism or mirror diagonal and very little
in-focus distance available would have the same problem with this eyepiece. I notice a touch of kidney bean effect with the f/4 optics, I suspect this would go away at f/6 and slower. The rubber eyecups help position the eye to minimize this. The eye relief is excellent, but the eye must be just the right distance from the front lens for best viewing.

The only comparison to other premium eyepieces I can make is to the Speer-WALER 10mm and the 9mm Nagler Type 6. Both have larger fields of view but with eye relief sacrificed. Both are very sharp, but no sharper than the Siebert within the 65 degree center. Also, the Speers-WALER has a touch of lateral color, I have detected none so far in the Siebert.
