I purchased all of the inexpensive "big" binoculars I could find that were in the 12-20 x 60-70 range. These were the best hands down. I have used most of the high end binoculars swarvosky, Leica, Leitz, etc. and of course there is no comparison in optic quality and I didn't expect as such.

However, if your looking for a powerful binocular that is easy on the eyes and the wallet this is the one. No other high power bonocular allowed me to relax like this when viewing. If you've looked through a pair of swarvosky's you know what I mean. The optics let you relax.

That said, I'm 6'2 220 and I'm not holding steady on a bird for more than 20 seconds and whatever you want to view won't be closer than 25 yards.

So, If like to get in a chair, prop your knees up and rest your elbows on your knees while enjoying a powerful relaxing view of life go get a pair. I use mine to scan the ocean for wildlife and go to the forest to look for Bald eagles.

If you get a pair: 1) Be sure the eye piece dosn't go out of focus when you put pressure on them.
2) Look through the eye piece then take them away 6 inches and look at the light comming through the eye piece. The light should form a perfect circle. If it looks like an egg shape get another pair.

unreal, love to watch the wild life, as i was blessed to live in a small country town in oregon, im one of those that would rather hunt deer, with Binocs, than a gun, and the blackhawks 15x70 do a great job.

I got mine at a Dunham's Sports in-store special for $80. Looking through them in the store, I was immediately impressed by the long eye relief and the bright sharp optics.
These claim to have BK-4 prisms. Initial viewing outdoors confirms good edge sharpness and contrast. Internal relections are minimal and they are light and comfortable to hand hold. I haven't had a chance to do any astronomical viewing yet. Definitely a good value.

I've lived with these binoculars for nearly twelve months now, and am happy to say I keep reaching for them. Often the 8 inch dob is passed over for these.

The optics are satisfyingly sharp for a good part of the field, and acceptable to good right out to the edge. The build quality seems good, and mine were well collimated after USA-Oz postage.

15x70 is a real sweet spot for astro use I find. The magnification is enough to keep you interested for extended observing. Used with a good camera tripod and metal adaptor is the way to go, but I like to occasionally hand-hold lying on my back (freedom!), which is enjoyable for short periods. Two eyes under dark skies!

The price is stupid, around US$70 plus s/h. Every time I think of upgrading (not often), I can't find a better option on my budget. If you want a dirt cheap, lower power travel scope / poor man's binoviewer, the Blackhawks are hard to beat.

when looking at bright objects, it can be expected to have ghosting/glare. Used for open clusters or deep sky, the views are terrific.

this is capable of being collimated by the owner, which is not always the case. this will save expense when it is needed.

the mount is useless as it is--too much vibration. one could use auto body putty if they wanted to stiffen it for use, but it is just as easy to make a new one from aluminum. Heartland America sold them for about $60, and many of the members of our astronomy club have a pair. more members want them, but they haven't been available for some time.

at $59.00 at heartland america i had to get a pair.the color correction is better than fujinon 10x70s however there was ghost images left and right of the moon and jupiter which forced me to sell.the collimation was off which was easy to fix.the plastic tripod adapter is so bad that the binos vibrate
for 5 seconds.maybe a better lens coating whould have fixed the ghosting problem then i would had kept the binos.

I puchased the Barska Blackhawk 15 x 70's through Heartland America. They were $69.99 plus shipping, $80 and some change total! I am highly impressed with the quality and performance. I went to see Neil McCoy in concert and had to sit in row R to be far enough away to reach focus. I clearly saw that he had apparently smashed his fourth finger in his right hand as the nail was black! My only complaint about the Barska 15 x 70's is that the neck strap is too flimsy!

I have the Sportsman's Guide version called Galileo. For $69.95, they can't be beat. They are bright, contrasty, and sharp over at least the middle 50% (by area) of the view. Eye relief is 20mm and apparent field of view is 65 degrees. Very comfortable to use with eyeglasses.

Mine arrived in perfect collimation and with a tripod adapter. Others have reported not getting a tripod adapter. It's not the best one in the world, but is better than nothing at all. The case and caps are very nice. The strap, while minimally functional, is a joke at only 1/4 inch wide.

They are perfect for large star clusters such as the Pleiades and the belt of Orion. The Orion nebula is quite evident and placed in context quite nicely. The field of view isn't big enough to take in the Hyades, though. Perseus is very nice to view.

15x is just not enough to do much with planets other than note moon alignments. I have yet to try them on the moon.

I finally tried them out on the moon.  They are sharp in the central region, and they don't significantly distort the moon's shape as it is moved toward the edge of the field (though it gets a little blurry).

However, the amount of glare/scattered light/flaring going on is immense.  Even with the moon outside the field of view, the background goes much brighter.  By the time the moon is in the field of view, it is white on grey instead of white on black.  I don't know if this is due to poor baffling or poor coatings, but it is pronounced.

Still, this should not deter someone from getting one of these for $70 for general deep sky work.
These binos have faint blue lenses, but are not fully coated. There are noticeable secondary reflections on some very bright objects (think full moon, arcturus, etc.) but nothing bothering when viewing most astro objects.

They have a fairly wide field of view, that is flat and clear, and nice round exit pupils. (On both the bk-7 and bak4 versions I have used BTW, though this might not be true of all of them.)

Objects like the lagoon nebula, the swan, resolve beautifully, and clusters like M13, M22, etc. show up as big dense fuzz balls, but not individual stars.

I have bought a couple pairs of these, paying $69 for one, and $99 for the other, and they were very much worth it.
As others have said before me, this is a deal no amateur astronomer should pass up.

(And they get used a lot too, since they are light, give great views, and If I drop them in a lake someday, it won't make me cry like dropping a $1000 pair of Steiners would. Of course the Steiners would probably survive intact, but you get the point.)
