What a great eyepiece. M13 was best I've seen it. Saturn and Jupiter were great barlowed. Eye relief was pleasent. Comparing this to my TV plossls I would have to give the edge in brightness to the ortho, fov to the plossl although not a great deal and the quality of view about the same. The ortho beats it hands down in price.

I recently purchased a used 9mm UO Ortho and it is definitely a keeper! I used it in my 13.1" f/4.5 Coulter, 8" SCT, and my son's 10" f/4.5 Dob and it performed well in all three. The views of Saturn were most spectacular. I was able to discern details in the ring bands and shadows on the surface clearer that with my 7mm Nagler. I have seen lots of comments stating the eyerelief was unbearable but it did not bother me whatsoever...I don't wear glasses. I can't wait to get a night when the atmosphere is extremely stead so I can try barlowing for higher magnifications.

Exceptional eyepiece for lunar, planetary and globulars - some of the sharpest and brightest views I have ever had, bar none. Barlows very well with the Celestron Ultima 2x barlow for excellent high power planetary observations. Eye relief is long enough that I can see 95% of the FOV with my glasses on.

I have tried numerous mid- to high-end 5mm eyepieces to get the magnification I need for the planets and a wider FOV. None compare with the U.O. 9mm barlowed for sharpness and contrast.

Get one, keep it and love it.

I know it's all been said, but here's my two cents anyway:
If you can get passed the narrow FOV, you'll realise you're holding a top notch eyepiece. Mine is the latest version, an ortho HD. It's supposed to have better lens coating than the Abbe orthos (i.e. the volcano top model) and grooved barrel.
I don't have the resources ($$) to compare it with Pentax' and Zeiss' orthos, but for something this good to be sold at less than 75$ (the ''other guys'' orthos go for 3 to 8 times that price!), it's normal to think there's a catch. The only one I know is that you won't find any large page-size ads in top astronomy magazines for this one. U.O. keep their costs down to a minimum (i.e. no publicity); those savings are then passed on to us, the customers!

Evaluation was done using a 114mm f7.9 Newton, a 200mm f6.0 Dob and a Celestron C80 ED on occasion.

Using it on the Celestron SCT 9.25" F/10 (261X), the 9mm give excellent views of Saturn and Jupiter with no ghosting (I did line the barrel with protostar flock paper). These orthos are every bit as good as everyone says, with an incredible price to boot! The only problem is the narrow FOV. I don't mind the small eye relief, however. Now that I'm using a Starmaster 12.5" F/4.5, I'm sorry to say but I've decided to sell the 9mm (hand-tracking it is a bitch on the SM with the narrow FOV). I give it a 9 - no EP deserves a 10; they can all be improved upon.

The 9mm UO Ortho is my favorite eyepiece in my f/4.5 scope. It is very sharp across the FOV, excellent contrast. Good place to start a no frills workhorse eyepiece set.

Great contrast and sharp to the edge. Short on eye relief. Rubber eye-gurds from Orion help with the short eye-reief. Could improve if the eyepiece came with an eye-guard.

Optically this is a great eyepiece for the price. I use it routinely unbarlowed to split close double stars (between 0.5 and 1 arc-second) and barlowed to effect splits down to 0.35 arc-second with my C-14 on the very best nights. Clear, bright and crisp airy discs! I like this eyepiece so much that I ordered a second one for use with my Televue binoviewer. It is an incredible way to observe double stars! All that for only $60.00. UO could charge at least 3x that amount for the eyepiece and it would be worth it.

lensed monsters; pick up the crystal orthoscopic; it is the
best for the planet watcher, bar none.
